Child Custody
Current law provides that neither side is presumed to be a "better parent." Instead, each parent has a right to ensure time with their children. In family law cases, parents often have several concerns related to their parental rights, as well as payment of child support. These concerns need to be addressed as early in a case as possible. Courts are interested foremost, in maximizing a child’s regular and continued contact with parents who have shown they are capable of serving the best interests of their children.

A parenting plan is a document that is created in the context of a divorce or other child custody matter that helps parents outline a parenting schedule. The plan usually includes a specific scheme for sharing time with children, and also establishes each parent’s responsibilities to raise and support a child. Parents who can agree on a detailed parenting plan that reflects the overall best interest of a child will often enjoy a more stable, predictable, and consistent schedule that reduces misunderstandings, conflicts, and legal costs. If parents can't agree, the court will set the terms and responsibilities related to custody and child support.

Parents and children all benefit from a detailed parenting plan that provides predictability. Children who know in advance which parent they will be with and what they will be doing usually feel more secure, stable, and self-confident than a child who is left wondering what comes next. Also, a detailed parenting plan can reduce legal costs by reducing misunderstandings between parents, which helps parents stay out of court and away from high litigation costs.

Any parent involved in a case that addresses child custody must have a thorough understanding of current custody laws and trends, including those related to joint custody of children.

Family Law
Divorce/Family Law - Many issues confront persons facing the difficulties of divorce. Resolution of those issues can impact a person for years to come. Those issues include property rights, financial obligations to creditors, spousal support, and, most importantly, issues related to time spent with minor children. It is important and necessary to be fully educated about these issues before making decisions. We strongly encourage people to consider an initial consultation with an attorney to learn about your rights and obligations before you make decisions that will have lasting impact. Not every divorce case needs to be a nightmare - many can progress in a cooperative and reasonable manner. However, every party to a divorce must be be fully informed on the law and how certain choices can have lifelong consequences.
